American Hustle VS The Wolf of Wall Street

Que se estrenen ambas películas con una semana de diferencia no es la única coincidencia que las une. Evidentemente, esto ha incitado a las comparaciones entre ambas y a una de ellas no le ha venido nada bien (¿igual por ser la que se estrenó después?).

Y, como a Críticas De A Pie nos va la controversia, vamos a comparar lo que nos ha parecido lo mejor y lo peor de las dos pelis para que cada uno de vosotros saquéis vuestras propias conclusiones:

AMERICAN HUSTLE	THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
A favor
Antes de nada, debemos aclarar que se trata de una película de amor en la que se mezclan estafas de por medio, pero la finalidad es siempre el amor entre Sydney e Irving. Se podría resumir en la cuestión moral de si el fin justifica, o no, los medios. La película está ambientada en la década de los setenta y, cabe decir que la estética (tanto el vestuario como las pelucas) está tan bien conseguida que llega a ser incluso ridícula, sobre todo, en los personajes masculinos. Y, hablando de los personajes, éstos están muy elaborados. Tanto, que llegan a ser incluso una caricatura. Las actuaciones son todas ellas merecedoras de estar nominadas a los Oscar. Impresionantes Amy Adams y Christian Bale. Como mejores escenas, buenísimo el momento de la permanente de Bradley Cooper y el de JLaw quemando, por segunda vez, la cocina.	Cuenta con la dirección de Martin Scorsese y eso ya es sinónimo de éxito asegurado. Aunque no se trate de un largometraje que parezca típico de él, su experiencia y maestría se hacen notar. La película, para tener una duración de nada menos que 180 minutos, es muy entretenida a la vez que trepidante. Además, tiene un cínico guión muy elaborado. La actuación de Leonardo Di Caprio es increíble (bien merecedora de un Oscar, al menos, a nuestro parecer) y Johan Hill también consigue estar a su altura. Es una pena que se fueran sin estatuilla alguna. Las mejores escenas, sin duda, cuando Di Caprio tiene el colocón después de haber tomado Lemmons y el momento espinacas de Popeye, brutales.
En contra
Se han realizado muchas críticas en contra de La Gran Estafa Americana, muchas de ellas, haciendo un juego de palabras con su título bastante facilón. Entre ellas, se comenta que el guión es flojo, que el argumento no tiene suficiente peso. Por nuestra parte, como hemos comentado anteriormente, no lo vemos así. Simplemente hay que ver la historia desde la perspectiva de que el fin justifica los medios. Como punto negativo American Hustle ha sido una de las grandes perdedoras de esta edición de los Oscar, toda una pena.	Aunque se trate de una peli frenética en la que no hay tiempo para aburrirse, es cierto que se nota que dura tres horas. Se podría haber cortado algún minuto de rodaje y la historia hubiera sido igual de buena y con el mismo sentido. El Lobo de Wall Street también ha sido otra de las grandes perdedoras de los Oscar. Parece ser que la Academia la ha castigado por tener demasiadas escenas obscenas. Desde Críticas De A Pie no estamos de acuerdo con este pensamiento tan purista y conservador, creemos que una película no deja de ser mejor por mostrar sexo explícito ya que, a veces, es necesario para darle más énfasis  a la historia.

 

Después de la reciente gala de los Oscar, ambas películas han quedado empatadas a ojos de la Academia (las dos se han ido con los bolsillos vacíos). Pero, a los nuestros, esta partida la ha ganado The Wolf of Wall Street. ¡Ánimo, Leo, algún día te tocará a ti! 🙂

American Hustle VS The Wolf of Wall Street

The release date (at least in Spain) is not the only coincidence that makes meeting these two films. Obviously, this has prompted comparisons between them and one of them has been a bit injured (maybe for being the one released after?). And, as Criticas De A Pie we like the controversy, we are going to compare what we believe is the best and the worst of both films in order to each of you bring your own conclusions:

AMERICAN HUSTLE	THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
Pros
First of all, we should clarify that this is a love story in which frauds are mixed trough, but the really purpose is always the love between Sydney and Irving. It could be summarized with the moral question of whether the ends justify or not the means. The film is set in the seventies and, it is worth to say that the aesthetic (both costumes as wigs) is so well achieved that becomes even ridiculous, especially in the male characters. And, talking about the characters, they are quite elaborated. So much, they even become a cartoon. Performances are all of them worth to be nominated for the Oscar. Amazing Amy Adams and Christian Bale. As best scenes, terrific the moment of the Bradley Cooper’s permanent and also JLaw burning, for second time, the kitchen.	It counts with the direction of Martin Scorsese and this is a synonym of guaranteed success. Although it is not a film that looks typical from him, his experience and expertise are noticeable. The tape, for having duration of no less than 180 minutes, is very entertaining as well as exciting. It also has a very elaborate and cynical script. The performance of Leonardo Di Caprio is terrific (well deserving of an Oscar, at least, in our opinion) and Johan Hill also gets to be at his level. It is a shame they left without the little statue. The best scenes are, without any doubts, when Di Caprio is so high after having Lemmons and the spinach moment of Popeye, amazing.
Cons
There have been many criticisms against American Hustle, many of them, making a facile pun with its title. Among them, it is said that the script is weak, that he argument does not have enough weight. From our side, as mentioned above, we do not see it like this. It is needed to see the story from the perspective that the end justifies the means. As a negative point, the film has been one of the biggest losers of this year’s Academy Awards, it is a shame.	Although it is a frantic film in which there is no time to get bored, it is true that it is felt it lasts three hours. It could be cut some shooting minute and the story would have been as good and with the same sense. The Wolf of Wall Street also has been one of the big losers of the Oscar. Apparently the Academy has punished it for having too many obscene scenes. From Criticas De A Pie we do not agree this as purist and conservative though, we believe that a film is not worst for showing explicit sex on it because, sometimes, it is necessary to give more emphasis to the story.

 

After the recent Oscar’s show, both films have been tied for the eyes of the Academy (the two have gone with empty pockets). But, for ours, this game has been won by The Wolf of Wall Street. Come on, Leo, some day you will win! 🙂
